Co-Op, Biochemical & Biophysical Research

The Vertex Co-Op Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective.You will be working closely with and learning from some of the brightest people in the industry. Co-op Program: 6 Month Commitment (January - June 2020), Full Time, 40 Hours/Week

The selected co-op student candidate will join the Vertex Boston Structural Biology and Biophysics Department and will conduct high level biochemical and biophysical research including protein expression and purification, development of functional assays and structural studies proteins. Specific tasks may include:

  • Cell culture methods, including, but not limited to E. coli and mammalian cells.
  • Expression and purification of proteins using both manual and automated chromatography systems.
  • Use of various biochemical and biophysical techniques, including SDS-PAGE and Western blots, MST and SPR.
  • Use of high throughput crystallization automation screening robots.
  • Negative-stain and cryo-EM sample preparation.


  • Candidate must be enrolled in a degree program in Biology or Biochemistry at a sophomore level or above.
  • 3.2 GPA or above.
  • Candidate should ideally be enrolled in an advanced degree program if graduating in Spring 2020.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Biology or Biochemical Lab experience.
  • Completed Biology/Biochemistry coursework as a major focus of studies.
  • Attention to detail, flexibility and ability to manage multiple competing priorities while meeting expected deadlines.
  • Exhibits a high level of verbal and written communication skills, as well as, the ability to interact cross functionally.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Highly motivated and energetic.
  • Strong work ethic and tenacity.
  • A desire to be part of a highly innovative company aimed at transforming the lives of people with serious diseases, their families, and society.
